It is hard to believe that December has arrived! I keep thinking to myself, where did the time go?
With all of the Holiday “hustle and bustle” it is so easy to get sucked into the endless running from celebration to celebration. This is when it is truly important for us all to take a moment, breathe in deeply, and pause. Take in the experience in its entirety and appreciate all the little things. After all, this is what the Holidays are all about. This idea of mindfulness is something that I plan on doing with the students each day so that we can really stop and take in these precious little moments.
The excitement is contagious this time of year when we begin discussing our December Holidays and Traditions unit. Giving the students the chance to share their family experiences is a great way for students to teach one another about the Holidays rather than hearing it directly from the teacher. I encourage you to continue having these discussions at home regarding how and why you celebrate in a particular way. I look forward to having your child share these experiences with us.
The first week of December we will be focusing on the differences and similarities we share in the way we celebrate holidays in December. The week of December 5th we will begin to discuss Kwanzaa and Hanukkah.
December 11th-23rd we will be discussing Hanukkah, Christmas and New Years traditions.
Throughout the entire month students will be encourage to “spread good cheer” to others in our community. We have implemented “Caught You Cards” in school to help promote positive behaviors and support Main Street School’s four B’s. Be kind, be your best, be safe and be respectful. If students are caught modeling these types of behaviors the adult will reward the student with a “Caught You Card”, which will be displayed on a bulletin board in the hallway. These tickets then go into a raffle in which a student is picked at random to enjoy a special lunch with their peers and adults in the building.
Important dates to remember:
December 7 – Early Release Day
December 16 – Winter Holiday Celebration from 12:45 – 2:15
December 23 – Polar Express / PJ Day!
December 26 – January 2 – No School ~ Holiday Break
From all of us here at Main Street School, we wish you the Happiest of Holidays and a Happy New Year!
